Twist
I learned to sail when I was quite young and learned to appreciate the feeling of being on, close to or
in the water.
Twist is a project that started with my affection for this world. While playing with it’s aesthetic and
materiality I started researching some of the crafts closely related to the nautical world, focussing most
on rope making.
Rope making has been a craft known to men since the ancient Egyptians. Since then numerous different
techniques were used to create all kinds of rope with different materials and strengths.

I focussed on the old technique that twists multiple strings into one rope. This normally is done with three
to five strings. By adding more strings the material qualities change and it becomes possible for instance
to turn solid materials into the rope, giving the old technique a twist and producing a whole new material.
